Whether it is running financial models, working in a laboratory conducting experiments or writing short stories, what excites Ashay is the delicate balance of both art and science that these tasks require – combining both analysis and judgment, technical and fundamental, interpretation and intuition.

He attended Duke University in North Carolina, where he studied Biology, English and Economics. While in college, he interned at Merrill Lynch in India, where he got his first glimpse into the world of finance and was hooked.

The investment world, he realized, offered him the perfect mix of art and science that he found so intriguing. After graduation, instead of joining the family business, he decided to work as an investment banker in New York at Bank of America. There, he was responsible for the execution of M&A and capital markets transactions for banks, insurance companies and exchanges.

Having grown up in India, however, Ashay was always passionate about the Indian growth story and wanted to be a part of it. During the eight years he lived in the U.S., he was able to see India changing at a remarkable pace. The crucial infrastructure that was necessary to support the developing economy took shape as Indian companies entered the global stage and acquired foreign counterparts. Before he missed any of it, he decided to leave New York and return home in 2008, joining Matrix India as part of the core investment team.

Ashay believes investing is a discipline of calculated instinct and is actively looking to partner with companies that are poised to capitalize on India’s growth.
