The world of finance caught Satish’s imagination as early as in his high school years. Encouraged by his father, a banker, he learnt about the business world as much from annual reports and business periodicals as he did from text books. So, to him the subject was never about dry concepts or figures but one alive with real-life entities and situations. This helped root him in a logical, commonsensical approach to the discipline.
Through college and graduate studies at Indian Institute of Management, Satish gained a deeper understanding of the complex aspects of business. He was initially attracted to the application of clear, analytical thought to investing, but later grew to appreciate the importance of instinct and calculated risk. The intellectual exercise of identifying successful enterprises ahead of the curve and tracking their evolution from ideation was so appealing that a career in financial services was an obvious choice.
ICICI Ltd gave him an opportunity to hone his skills in corporate finance, distressed assets and wholesale banking (credit and relationship functions). While there, he was exposed to corporations at various stages of their life cycle, from high-growth to near-distressed and turnaround situations. He believed private equity could provide the depth that he sought along with a better risk-adjusted return for the firm’s capital. After a short stint at Standard Chartered, he joined Kotak Private Equity in early 2005 as Kotak was initiating its first structured, third party, private equity fund. The fund focused on investing in emerging and mid-size enterprises and provided the ideal platform for him to execute transactions across growth, buyout and venture stages.
He joined Matrix India in 2008 as a part of the core investment team.
Satish enjoys teasing out the minute details about the functioning and health of a business from aggregated financial data, and is enthusiastic about identifying and capitalizing on new growth opportunities.
